These are the top four producers of dog crates in all different designs. You can find them and their products on the internet or in pet supply stores everywhere.
Petmate formerly Doskocil
Back in the 1960’s the owner of this company had the idea of making a better dog carrier for flying dogs and cats on airlines. It seems back then they used wooden crates. A contract with Delta airlines to provide carriers helped the company flourish. After some design refinements the crate became manufactured out of plastic and the design became an industrial standard. The company makes many other items such as plastic dog houses, steps, watering and feeding solutions, etc. Petmate has merged with some other companies to provide a broader range of pet items.
Formed in 1964 this company spun off another that was making trash burners. These wire mesh boxes were being bought by a client that was selling them to keep puppies in. Recognizing a niche General Cage was formed and began supplying the pet industry, still in its infancy. They make crates; both wire and soft, dog playpens, barriers and many other items for pets. Sturdy products they make stack-able wire crates as well.
Midwest Home for Pets is another company that was making one item and realized the benefits they could provide for the pet supply industry. Maker of formed wire products they found they could make containment for pets. Like the previous two companies they make a whole line of products for pets. They have several lines of wire crates with different wire gauges for sturdiness. Midwest seems to be the most widely sold crates.
East Coast Crates
Need something a little more sturdy then check out East Coast Crates. They make aluminum dog crates that are solid instead of the popular wire design. These are for heavy transportation like shows. They make boxes for hunters, show dogs, stacking and folding, as well as custom work. Crates are about all they do and have been doing for thirty years. East Coast Crates are breeders of Afghan Hounds so they have expertise in the design.
