If you do not want your dog making themselves at home on the couch or on your bed you need to get them one of their own. Here is a rundown of the types of dog beds available and there are a lot out there for all dog types. You should know how your dog sleeps, breed, general size (small, medium, large, extra large) and weight before you shop. There are lots to choose from in colors, patterns and materials for all types of dogs.
Basic Dog Bed
Basic dog beds are built like a pillow without any raised sides or bolsters. They are constructed as an outside cover with some sort of filling for padding. The covers are usually removable for washing and many of the inserts have zippers to replace padding materials if needed. The cover all shapes sizes and are usually made of a durable material such as canvas, fleece or flannel and some are made into waterproof dog beds. The basic dog bed is fine for younger dogs without any joint or arthritic problems. These make excellent day beds in other parts of the house that your dog may spend time in other than where they sleep.
Nest Dog Bed
Nest dog beds are constructed similarly to the basic dog bed with the addition of sides around all or most of the bed. The sides allow your dog to lean or curl up. This is where knowing how your dog sleeps will help you determine what type of dog bed to buy. The nest is great for dogs that like to curl up to sleep but a large dog that sleeps stretched out or on their back would not be comfortable in this type of dog bed and would likely not use it.
