Some dogs have no problems with trimming toe nails while other absolutely cannot stand it. I had one of the later and he was terrible when it came to handling his feet. The vet even would baulk at a request to trim his nails. A better way of keeping nails trimmed for all types of dogs but especially the ones that are adverse to nail trimming would be a device called dog nail grinders.
Dog nail grinders are rotary tools very similar to the Dremel tool or other manufacturers of these types of devices. They are hand held, can be fitted with numerous different tools for grinding the nail. The main tool is sandpaper fitted on a small cylinder.
You can use a regular rotary tool to grind the nail but, this is VERY IMPORTANT, you must not go above 7,500 rpm with the tool or you will burn the nail causing pain to your dog. The rotary tools are only good for large to extra large breeds with thicker nails. The main difference between the grinders that are specifically for nails and the regular rotary tool is the nail grinders do not go above 12000 while the rotary tools go far beyond that. Other differences; most nail grinders are battery operated for portability and lighter in design. There are some professional models that are corded.
Do not expect to use a dog nail grinder on your pet right after you purchase it. The units generate some whirling noises with the mechanics of the device. You dog will likely need to get accustomed to the sound. The rotary tools are much louder and that is another good reason to buy one specifically designed for pet nails.
The grinding action is new to your dog as well and will likely need an adjustment period before you can sit down for all nails at once. It is recommended to only do a little at a time.
Grinding a dog’s nail is a good alternative to using nail clippers. It can be a good substitute for a dog that does not like its nails or feet handled. If you are going to use a regular rotary tool make sure to search the internet for instructions first. If you have large breed dogs make sure you get a device that will be powerful enough. The device sold on TV is good for small dogs but we found it week for our Labrador retrievers.
