With summer is here and it is time to hit the water. We have a new Labrador retriever puppy and although bred to be a water dog I would prefer to have her properly equipped when we go out boating on the lake. A dog life vest is certainly a great piece of equipment to invest in for the safety of everyone, including the pooch and especially small breeds. Long swims can tire your dog and if in weather rough water will add to fatigue.
There are many manufacturers, that make life vests, to chose from and they are made for both fun and functionality. All are made from water proof material and most have quick release systems to take off and adjust. They come in all sizes and colors, some with patterns for the fashion conscience. Most come with a handle on the back to help pull a dog in a boat or just lend a hand getting out of the water.
They make special dog vests for hunters who use them as their dogs may be asked to retrieve many times and for long distances. The ones for sporting dogs have just enough flotation material to aid in floating but not hinder the dog from thier retrieval. They are designed for custom fitting the dog. Most, made specifically for hunting have reinforced chest protection. Never know what’s in that pond water.
I have always liked the Ruff Wear brand of dog products as they make products for the working dogs as well (search and rescue, etc). They helped her stand on slick surfaces and helped on uneven terrain. The Ruff Wear vests are especially designed to keep the dog in an optimal position for swimming. Good looking too. You can get a cheap dog life vest but Why? You are buying protection for you best buddy don’t go on the skinny. Expect to pay 25 to 50 dollars for a small dog life vest and upwards to 75 for a large dog life vest. I think I have decided on the Ruff Wear for the design and I know from past purchases they have great customer service.
