What is Dog Joring
Joring is an activity that a person is pulled by something while the person has some sort of gear that they can ride. For an example skijoring is an activity where the person is on skis and are pulled by, originally a horse but it could be a truck, tractor or dog(s). Joring has the person on something they can ride such as skis, bikes or scooters. Cani Cross is a version of joring where the dogs are attached to the handler via a joring harness but everyone is cross country running.
History of Dog Joring
Skijoring originated in Scandinavian countries as a means of transportation with a horse as the puller. There are many competitions with horses as the pulling mechanism. Skijoring was introduced as a sport in the 1928 winter olympics. Dog joring has evolved from these roots. There are certain breeds that love to pull. In order to utilize the natural skills of these dog breeds (such as huskies) crazy dog people have come up with several varities of the original skijoring in order to exercise and bond with their dogs.
Gear Needed for Dog Joring
The basic gear needed is a harness, for the dog and some leads that attach to the rider via a belt system and some form of locomotion (skis, mountain scooter or bike). The harness is specially made to be both comfortable and safe for the dog. A lot of gear for this sport originates from dog mushers wanting to practice during off season when there is no snow. Skijoring requires no special equipment while bike joring requires some hardware hookup to the bike itself. I have seen both front loaded leads and equipment that has the dog tethered on the side of the bike. The scooters for joring are specially made mountain scooters that have strong, reinforced frames and larger, knobby tires for all terrain. All of the scooters I have seen hook to a special bracket on the front of the scooter. Scooter joring is becoming very popular and is great training for those off-season dog mushers.
How to get started with Dog Joring
Unless you live in the North West or Alaska or some other areas that have snow you are likely on your on when it comes to getting involved in joring.
